Passengers voiced their complaints on platforms like TikTok and Twitter, sharing images of the dirty luggage and criticizing airport staff’s response, who reportedly could not offer wipes or replacement bags immediately. Customers were advised to contact Virgin Atlantic’s customer service via email instead.

In response, Virgin Atlantic clarified that the bags were contaminated by grease from a broken pipe in the terminal, not fecal matter. The airline expressed regret over the inconvenience and said they are cooperating with airport authorities to resolve the situation.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about baggage handling cleanliness, supported by recent studies revealing high bacterial presence on luggage wheels. Airlines and airports continue to explore solutions to improve hygiene and passenger experience.
