Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner has passed away at 56, leaving behind an incredible legacy as the first man to break the sound barrier while skydiving. Felix’s most famous achievement occurred in 2012 when he jumped from the edge of space at nearly 39,000 meters, reaching speeds of 850 mph during free-fall. His incredible feat captured the world’s imagination and set new records for parachuting.

The feat was made possible by a complex pressure suit with multiple layers designed to protect him from extreme cold, pressure changes, and other hazards of near-space. He said the suit restricted him but was vital for his safety.

Tributes have begun flooded in for legendary stuntman Felix (Buda Mendes/Getty Images for Laureus)

Though another skydiver surpassed his altitude record two years later, Felix’s contribution to extreme sports remains unmatched. His bravery and skill continue to inspire thrill-seekers worldwide.
