The Simpsonville community is mourning the loss of 8-year-old Lionel Ramirez Cervantes, who tragically drowned after running away from Bells Crossing Elementary School on September 12, 2024. Last seen just before 11:10 a.m., Lionel vanished under circumstances that prompted a large search effort.
Though staff and other students were present, Lionel broke away and was not found until his body was recovered from a nearby pond hours later. Law enforcement asked locals to check their properties and cameras during the search to aid the rescue effort.
The sheriff’s department was quick to respond with search teams including dive units but expressed their heartbreak upon discovering Lionel’s body. Victim coordinators were on hand to assist the grieving family.
Lionel’s mother took to Facebook, sharing her sorrow and thoughts about the circumstances, thanking the community for their support while grieving her son’s untimely death.
