Emma Bray’s recent passing has resonated deeply, especially within communities affected by motor neurone disease (MND). Diagnosed in 2023, Emma faced the harsh realities of an illness that slowly claimed her mobility and speech, challenging her spirit and her family’s resilience.
Communicating through an eye-tracking machine, Emma openly described how her life became confined to bed, where even the smallest movements were lost. Her loving nature remained, but the disease stole many simple joys, including the ability to comfort her two teenage children.
Emma revealed the emotional toll on her children who, for two years, lived with the heartbreaking knowledge of impending loss. Unable to hug or soothe them, Emma made the painful choice to prevent further trauma by selecting VSED—voluntarily stopping eating and drinking.
This legally supported decision gave her control over her final days, allowing her to be surrounded by music, laughter, and family. Emma wished to avoid the fearful and undignified death she dreaded.
Her farewell message, shared just days before her passing, invited others to celebrate life with acts of kindness and love, and to remember her with joy instead of tears.
Emma’s story is one of extraordinary courage, a woman’s love for her children, and the strength to choose peace amidst unimaginable suffering.
