Keep Your Lawn Mower Blades Sharp with This Simple Family Trick

Lawn care depends greatly on having a mower with sharp blades. While many remember to check filters and fuel, sharpening blades often gets missed. Dull blades tear grass and damage its health, resulting in a worn-out yard appearance and vulnerability to pests and diseases.

My grandpa’s simple method for sharpening blades suits any homeowner—no fancy equipment or technical skill needed. Just grab sandpaper, a can of WD-40 or light oil, a socket wrench for your blade bolts, and a sturdy piece of wood.

To sharpen, carefully tilt your mower with the carburetor facing upwards to avoid leaks. Use a socket wrench to remove the blade. Spray WD-40 on sandpaper placed on the wooden block, then rub the blade edge against it a few times with a steady hand until it’s sharp. Reinstall the blade securely.

This process takes less than 20 minutes and greatly improves lawn cutting. Always disconnect power and wear gloves to protect yourself. Work cautiously to avoid damage or injury.

Sharpened blades cut grass cleanly, reducing engine effort, saving gas, and promoting healthier, greener lawns. This easy technique can replace expensive professional sharpening or complicated tools. Avoid sharpening too much and remember to test blade balance by balancing it on a nail. Also, keep the mower and blades clean after use to prevent rust and maintain performance.
