One evening in 2016, a family in Thailand spotted a tiny kitten wandering by itself in their neighborhood. It seemed abandoned, but the kitten looked unlike any regular cat they knew. Curious and worried, the family contacted The Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) to investigate.
Veterinarians and wildlife experts arrived and conducted a thorough check. To their surprise, this kitten was actually a fishing cat—a rare wild cat native to Asia’s wetlands, known for hunting fish and spending time near water. Fishing cats are vulnerable due to shrinking wetland habitats, making discoveries like this very rare and important.
The kitten had likely been born only hours before being found, and abandonment at such a young age worried the rescue team. The family named him Simba and cared for the kitten while waiting for the mother, who never returned. Simba’s survival depended entirely on human care.
Given the high mortality rates among fishing cats in Thailand due to human threats, Simba’s life is a hopeful sign for the species. Conservationists stress that every rescued animal like Simba contributes to protecting vulnerable wildlife.
Simba’s story encourages people to be compassionate and aware of wildlife issues. It shows the difference that rescue and care can make, and the powerful message that all animals deserve a chance to survive and thrive.
