How Silver Poisoning Turned a Man’s Skin Blue

Argyria is a rare condition caused by silver buildup in the body, turning skin and other tissues a blue-gray color. This strange effect is permanent and often shows most in sun-exposed areas.

Paul Karason, an American man, became widely known for this condition. Originally fair-skinned, Paul began drinking colloidal silver to treat his facial skin problems. He made the silver solution himself and consumed about 10 ounces daily for about ten years.

Paul only realized his skin had changed when a friend visiting his Oregon home remarked on his unusual complexion. Despite this, Paul felt healthier. His acid reflux and arthritis symptoms disappeared, which he credited to the silver.

Paul died in 2013 after a series of health problems including a heart attack and stroke. His wife said he had mixed feelings about his “Papa Smurf” nickname. Children’s playful teasing made him happy, but adults’ remarks were tougher.
