First Rescue Mission Turns Rookie Coast Guard Into Lifesaver

In the midst of devastating floods in Central Texas, Petty Officer Scott Ruskan, a newly trained Coast Guard swimmer, faced his first rescue mission—and saved 165 lives in one day.

The Guadalupe River’s overflow trapped hundreds at Camp Mystic, including many children and elderly. Flooded roads and rising waters caused panic. Ruskan, stationed in Corpus Christi, was quickly deployed. Flying through harsh weather, he reached the camp and immediately began rescuing people.

He helped set up helicopter zones, guided frightened evacuees through water, lifted children aboard helicopters, and supported elderly residents. Over hours, he worked tirelessly, saving 165 people.

Ruskan credits the calm efforts of the kids and counselors. Homeland Security praised his bravery, and social media celebrated him as a hero. He remains humble, saying, “I was just doing my job,” but admits the emotional impact was strong.

The flood’s aftermath is severe, with homes lost and communities displaced. Yet Ruskan’s story stands out as a symbol of courage. Survivors remember his calm and kindness, and parents say he gave them hope in terrifying moments.

This rookie’s first mission became a powerful example of dedication and heart, proving heroism comes from rising to the challenge.
