Recent photos comparing the area before and after the devastating Texas floods reveal the full scale of the disaster. The floods hit Kerrville and surrounding communities on July 4, causing the Guadalupe River to rise rapidly and flood the region.
At least 59 people have died, including 15 children. Rescue teams are still searching for more than 20 children who were at Camp Mystic, a summer camp for girls that has been left without power and water.
Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said some missing children might simply be out of contact, not necessarily lost.
Photos shared online show the river and surrounding land before the flood—calm and dry—and after, when floodwaters covered everything except a few treetops. The river rose 23 feet in just two hours, shocking many locals.
Some people recalled a similar disaster in 1987, when a flash flood on the Guadalupe River killed 43 people, including teenagers at a church camp. That flood was the worst in 55 years.
Search and rescue efforts are ongoing as the community hopes for the safe return of those still missing.
