Blueberries Recalled Nationwide Over Deadly Listeria Contamination

The FDA has issued an urgent recall for certain blueberries after tests found they could be deadly if eaten. Alma Pak International LLC recalled 400 boxes of organic blueberries, each 30 pounds, shipped to a customer in North Carolina. The identity of the customer has not been disclosed.

The recall was prompted by the discovery of listeria monocytogenes during routine testing. The FDA has now upgraded the recall to Class I, the highest risk level, meaning there is a real danger of serious illness or death. The affected blueberries are identified by lot numbers 13325 G1060 and 13325 G1096.

Listeria is a bacteria that can contaminate many foods and cause listeriosis, a serious illness. The CDC reports that listeria is the third leading cause of foodborne deaths in the US, with about 260 deaths each year. Foods at highest risk include cold meats, smoked fish, shellfish, soft cheeses, pâté, pre-made salads, pre-cut fruit, and unpasteurized dairy.

Symptoms of listeriosis can be mild, like fever and nausea, but can be severe for pregnant women and those with weak immune systems. Foodborne illnesses are on the rise, with nearly 1,400 illnesses and 19 deaths linked to recalls last year. Recent outbreaks have also been tied to other foods, such as chicken fettuccine alfredo and deli meats.

If you have blueberries with the affected lot numbers, do not eat them. Dispose of them or return them to the store to stay safe.
