Fire Departments Urge Caution: Space Heaters Should Never Use Power Strips

As winter approaches, many turn to space heaters for warmth. However, firefighters are warning against plugging these heaters into power strips. Though it seems convenient, power strips can’t handle the high power draw of space heaters and may overheat, causing fires.

The Umatilla County Fire District #1 in Oregon shared a viral warning about this common mistake. Many people don’t realize the risk, and similar warnings have come from fire departments nationwide, including Toledo, Ohio, after a heater-related fire destroyed a home.

Space heaters can reach temperatures of 600 degrees Fahrenheit, so following safety guidelines is vital. Always plug heaters directly into wall outlets, avoid power strips and extension cords, keep at least three feet of space clear around the heater, never leave it running unattended, and place it on a stable, flat surface.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, portable electric heaters cause about 1,200 residential fires annually. The issue is usually improper use rather than faulty equipment. Using heaters correctly is key to safety.

Other heat-producing devices like hairdryers, toasters, and kettles should be unplugged when not in use. Extension cords are for temporary use only; if you rely on them regularly, consider having more outlets installed. Old electrical systems may need upgrading to handle modern power demands safely.

Damaged cords with exposed wires or broken plugs are fire hazards and must be replaced. Always follow appliance safety instructions and watch for warning signs like burning smells, hot outlets, or flickering lights.

Make sure smoke alarms are installed and tested regularly, with batteries replaced yearly. Respond immediately to any alarms. By taking these precautions, you can enjoy your space heater safely all winter long.
