Life After Fame: The Story of the ‘Afghan Girl’ Today

The photo of Sharbat Gula, taken by Steve McCurry in 1984, became an iconic image representing the plight of Afghan refugees. Her intense gaze captured the world’s attention, making her a symbol of resilience amid conflict. McCurry later said he sensed the photo’s importance but never imagined the global fame it would bring.

In 2002, McCurry found Gula again and took a new portrait, revealing the toll life had taken on her. She was a mother struggling with poverty and hardship, yet still showing determination. This meeting was their last interaction.

Following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, Gula fled Afghanistan and moved to Italy in 2022. She chose Italy because of its reputation for kindness and support toward refugees. Unlike her past, she now lives quietly, with only a few people knowing her true identity. She appreciates this peace and the chance to live without constant attention.
