An Anniversary Surprise Gone Wrong

My marriage to Thomas was cozy, not ideal but full of late-night talks and silly pancake mornings. Our first year was joyful, so I planned our anniversary with love, practicing a duck dish and getting a tie he’d admired. In my favorite dress, I set a candlelit table, heart light. Then Thomas called. “I’m off to the airport,” he said. “Work emergency.” My chest tightened. “It’s our anniversary,” I said. He vowed to make it up, but I felt alone, staring at the table. I opted for a warm bath instead of gloom, but the doorbell rang. In a towel, I took a ribbon-tied box from a delivery guy, anonymous, hoping Thomas sent a treat.

Opening it, I found a cake with gold icing: “Time to get divorced!” A note read, “Hope you take it like he did. XOXO.” My mind raced—was this a prank? Then Gloria, my mother-in-law, called. “Like the ring?” she asked. No ring came—Thomas always gifted early, but not today. “It’s perfect,” I lied, unease growing. She said Thomas was at our old romantic hotel, suggesting I surprise him. The cake, note, and missing ring felt wrong. I booked a flight, heart pounding—was Thomas unfaithful? I dashed to the airport, nerves raw, making the plane with seconds to spare, determined to find the truth.

At the hotel, I got his room number and knocked, shaking. A gorgeous brunette answered, smirking in a silk dress. “Thomas is in the shower,” she said, his clothes on the bed. I smashed the cake in her face, frosting flying. She screamed, slipping. I headed for the bathroom, ready to face Thomas, but found Gloria, champagne glass raised, grinning. “You’re feisty,” she said, admitting she sent the cake to split us, favoring her friend Alicia for Thomas. I held up my phone, showing I’d called Thomas, leaving it open. His angry voice rang out, vowing to meet me. Gloria’s smirk faded.

I left, tossing a jab at the icing-drenched Alicia. In the lobby, Thomas rushed in, stunned. “My mom’s lost it,” he said. Over dinner, we relaxed. He gave me a ring, his true gift, and I mentioned the tie at home, joking about no more anniversary trips. We laughed, our bond stronger. Gloria’s plan failed, and I’d shown her I wasn’t easy to push. She might try again, but I knew my power, ready to protect our love with fierce heart.
