Turning a Toothpick Trick into My Own Triumph

After a long day at the hospital, I just wanted to get inside and unwind. But a toothpick jammed in my front door lock stopped me. When it happened again, I didn’t call the cops—I set out to catch the culprit myself, turning their annoying prank into a lesson they’d never forget.

Nursing shifts leave me drained, so finding my key stuck in a lock was the last thing I needed. I tried everything—jiggling, poking with a clip, even talking to the door in frustration. Then I spotted the toothpick, clearly placed on purpose. This wasn’t some random accident.

I called my brother, Sam, who showed up with tools and a frown. “This was deliberate,” he said, freeing the toothpick with tweezers. My key worked again, and I hoped it was a one-time thing, maybe kids being silly. Sam wasn’t so sure. “If it happens again, let me know,” he said, leaving.

The next night, another toothpick. I called Sam, who arrived, half-amused, half-annoyed. “Someone’s got it out for you,” he said, suggesting a security camera. He rigged one in a tree by my porch, linking it to my phone. “This’ll catch them,” he said, confident.

That evening, I watched my phone nervously. At 7:10 p.m., a video showed my ex, Chris, sneaking up with a toothpick. Chris, who I’d left after his shady texts to another woman, was behind this. I rewatched the footage, stunned at his pettiness.

I called my friend Luke, a mechanic with a knack for bold moves, instead of the police. “Toothpicks? That’s desperate,” he laughed. We’d dated briefly but stayed friends, always up for a good scheme. “Let’s mess with him,” Luke said, outlining a plan that had me grinning.

The next night, I pretended to leave, loudly announcing a fake outing before parking nearby. I slipped back home, finding Luke in my pink bathrobe, barely covering his tattoos. “Ready for action,” he whispered. We watched the camera until Chris appeared. Luke threw open the door, holding a wrench. “Gotcha, toothpick guy!” he shouted.

Chris bolted, but I yelled, “Chris, why?” He stopped, admitting he thought I’d call him for help, hoping to win me back. “That’s ridiculous,” I said. Luke told him to leave, and Chris shuffled off. I posted the video online: “My ex tried to trap me with toothpicks. Here’s his lesson.” It exploded with views.

Chris emailed, begging me to remove it. I sent it to his boss, who was linked to his “friend.” Chris soon lost his job. Sam changed my locks, and Luke brought pizza to celebrate. My phone buzzed with more views. A small prank became a big win, thanks to a camera and a bold plan.
