From a Hidden Truth to Self-Discovery: An Inters-ex Farmer’s Journey

The story of Rob Wilson, a Tasmanian poultry farmer, is a profound narrative about identity and the lifelong impact of medical decisions made without consent. For fifty years, Rob lived his life as a man, unaware that a fundamental truth about his biology had been surgically altered shortly after his birth. He was born intersex, with both male and female genitalia. In a practice that was once common, doctors performed an operation on him at three days old, assigning him male and concealing the full nature of his physical self.

Growing up, Rob knew he was different. His father would acknowledge it in a vague, protective way, saying, “Rob’s different, but there’s nothing wrong with him.” From the age of eight, he was put on a daily regimen of testosterone, one of dozens of surgical and medical interventions throughout his life. Yet, his body continued to send signals that didn’t align with his assigned sex. He experienced a recurring, cramping pain that he rationalized as a work-related stitch, a minor inconvenience in an otherwise full life.

What he was actually experiencing were menstrual cycles. The surgery he had undergone as an infant meant his body could not menstruate normally, causing the blood to be reabsorbed and leading to problematic high iron levels. This created a cycle of unexplained symptoms that plagued him for decades. Without the context of his intersex status, neither he nor his doctors could properly diagnose the root cause of his suffering, leaving him to manage the effects without understanding their source.

The mystery was solved by a courageous act of truth-telling. As his aunt was dying, she called him to her side and revealed the secret: he had been born with a rare chromosomal condition called 48,XXXY. The revelation was, for Rob, a moment of liberation. It provided a coherent explanation for the pain he had endured and the sense of otherness he had always felt. The “stitch” was finally understood for what it was—a monthly period.

Now, Rob proactively manages his complex hormonal balance, seeking treatment in Ukraine where expertise in such rare conditions exists. His experience stands as a powerful indictment of the practice of non-consensual infant surgeries and a moving testament to the human need for self-knowledge. His journey underscores the importance of allowing individuals to understand and define their own bodies, on their own terms.
