Pancreatic cancer, the disease behind his passing, is often called the “silent killer” because symptoms typically only appear once the cancer has advanced. Around 67,440 Americans will be diagnosed with this type of cancer in 2025, according to the National Cancer Institute.

The pancreas, located behind the stomach, produces essential enzymes and hormones that help with digestion and blood sugar control. The most common pancreatic cancer starts in the ducts that release digestive enzymes. Because signs of the disease appear late, early detection is challenging.

Important symptoms to be aware of include abdominal pain that moves to the back, unexpected weight loss, difficulty eating, and unusual tiredness or itchiness. Changes in bowel movements, dark urine, and yellowing skin or eyes (jaundice) can occur due to bile duct blockage. New onset or worsening diabetes, as well as arm or leg pain and swelling caused by blood clots, are also red flags. Early medical consultation for these symptoms is critical.
