Balin Miller, 23, an emerging alpine climber from Alaska, lost his life in a tragic fall on El Capitan, Yosemite’s renowned rock face, on October 1. Miller had gained a dedicated following online for documenting his climbs and was live streaming his latest ascent along a route called “Sea of Dreams.”

An eyewitness, Yosemite photographer Tom Evans, reported that Miller was unaware his rope was too short when he tried to retrieve a bag of equipment, leading him to rappel off its end and fall over 2,400 feet. Authorities responded quickly but could not save him.
