Two new Covid-19 variants named Stratus and Nimbus are causing a rise in infections across the US. Stratus, first seen in Southeast Asia, and Nimbus, from China, both spread easily but do not appear to cause more severe illness than earlier strains.

Doctors warn of a distinct symptom: a razor-blade feeling in the throat, especially with the Nimbus variant, which can cause a hoarse voice. Both variants also produce cold-like symptoms such as fatigue, fever, cough, and sneezing.

Experts worry that vulnerable populations remain at risk, despite the lower severity. The CDC advises vigilance and recommends that those infected avoid contact with others and monitor symptoms closely.
