In a widely reported case in California, Riverside Poly High School forfeited a girls’ volleyball match against Jurupa Valley because the latter’s team features transgender athlete AB Hernandez. The forfeit on August 15 raised heated discussions about the participation of trans athletes in girls’ sports.
Riverside Poly’s statement cited the priority of safety and positivity for all players but did not specifically mention Hernandez. Parents from Riverside Poly later confirmed the forfeit was a protest against Hernandez’s inclusion.
Amanda Vickers, representing the school board, explained the decision by referencing a prior injury in another match involving a transgender player. She emphasized the effort to safeguard female athletes.
Hernandez’s mother, Nereyda, criticized these reasons and accused external groups of using fear and religion to marginalize transgender children. She highlighted the discrimination her daughter endures for simply being herself.
AB Hernandez has been vocal about the negative reactions, including protests with “Save Girls Sports” signs seen as hate symbols. Political figures like Donald Trump have made the issue part of their platform, threatening repercussions to schools allowing trans athletes.
The Hernandez family remains steadfast, advocating for fairness and inclusion despite substantial opposition.
