Trump’s Plan to Rename Pentagon Sparks Debate

Donald Trump has announced another controversial move: he wants to rename the Department of Defense to the Department of War. This change hasn’t been proposed in decades, but Trump, who has been active with executive orders since his return to the White House, believes it will strengthen America’s image. According to the BBC, the idea is to replace a name that sounds passive with one that appears more aggressive. “Department of Defense” gives the impression that the U.S. is just waiting to be attacked, while “Department of War” sends a message of readiness to fight. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is now responsible for making this name change permanent through legal or executive action.

On Fox News, Hegseth said the U.S. won World Wars I and II when the military operated as the War Department, not the Department of Defense. He stressed that the military’s role includes offense, not just defense, and confirmed that the new name would revive a “warrior ethos” to assert America’s strength to the world.

Reactions across social media have been mostly negative. Many users slammed the idea, calling it dumb and a potential embarrassment for the U.S. Others didn’t understand the reasoning or highlighted the high costs of such a change. This backlash also brought back memories of Trump’s earlier attempt to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” which was widely rejected by global audiences. Historically, the U.S. did have a Department of War until 1947, but Trump argues that America’s “unbelievable history of victory” came under that name and should be revived. Whether this is a bold move or a silly one, it fits perfectly with Trump’s style.
