Salmonella in Recalled Eggs Sickens Dozens: What Families Need to Know

A recent multistate salmonella outbreak linked to recalled eggs has left nearly 100 people sick, with more cases likely to be uncovered. The eggs at the heart of this outbreak come from Country Eggs, LLC, and have been found in cartons with names like Large Brown Cage Free Sunshine Yolks, but have also been repackaged under different brand labels, such as Nagatoshi Produce and Nijiya Markets. This practice makes it difficult to recognize recalled eggs.

Parents are advised to check their refrigerators immediately and throw away or return any eggs from these brands. Salmonella infection causes symptoms such as stomach pain, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting and can be very dangerous, especially for young children, seniors, and those with weak immune systems.

To prevent illness, families should always cook eggs fully and avoid foods made with raw or undercooked eggs. Thorough cleaning of kitchen surfaces and utensils after handling eggs is critical too. Health officials continue to monitor the situation and are working with stores to remove contaminated eggs from shelves swiftly.
