Kane Watson’s life ended in a tragic accident when a sand dune collapsed on him while playing with his children at Muriwai Beach. The 28-year-old father was digging in the sand with his young daughter and stepsons when the collapse buried him headfirst.

For 15 minutes, Kane was trapped, crying out as his kids sought help. Emergency services arrived and carefully dug him free before transporting him to hospital. He died the following day.

A University of Auckland expert explained the dangers of collapses like these, highlighting how the heavy sand and constant filling of holes make rescue difficult.

Messages from friends describe Kane as a loving dad and partner whose joy was his family. With a new baby expected soon, the loss is especially devastating.

His sister recalled him as her closest companion and an amazing father. The family is left grappling with a heartbreaking and sudden tragedy.
