Eric Clapton’s four-year-old son Conor died tragically in 1991 after falling from an unlatched window on the 53rd floor of a Manhattan apartment. Conor was visiting New York with his mother, actress Lory Del Santo. Clapton was on his way to pick him up but was delayed by a fax, missing his son’s accident by mere moments. Conor was weeks away from his fifth birthday.

The day before, Clapton and Conor shared a magical day at the Long Island circus—an experience that showed Clapton the joy he had been missing as a father. Following this, he hoped to bring Conor and Lory to London and spent time dreaming of family outings.
Following the accident, Clapton retreated from public life, carrying the heavy grief. Conor was buried in Ripley, Clapton’s childhood home, and Clapton spent nearly a year in isolation in Antigua, using music to heal.

He co-wrote the song “Tears in Heaven” to express his pain. Before his death, Conor had written a letter to Eric, which arrived after the funeral. This letter serves as a poignant reminder of their lost connection.
