FDA Warns of Radioactive Contamination in Frozen Shrimp, Expands Recall

The FDA expanded a recall on frozen shrimp products due to radioactive Cesium-137 contamination. Thirteen products from Southwind Foods, marketed under various brands, are affected across nine states.

Besides raw and cooked shrimp, shrimp salads also fall under the recall, having been sold in multiple retail and wholesale locations from July to August 2025.

Cesium-137, a radioactive byproduct from nuclear fission, is harmful over prolonged exposure and can contaminate food grown near affected areas.

No health cases have yet been reported, but investigations continue.

The contamination links to an Indonesian supplier now barred from U.S. entry due to sanitation and chemical concerns.

Previously, Walmart recalled Great Value shrimp for the same issue across a dozen states.

Consumers are encouraged to review packaging carefully and discard recalled shrimp immediately.

This recalls underscore the complexity of global seafood sourcing and the need for strict safety measures.
