Five Dead, Over 50 Hurt as Tour Bus Crashes and Rolls Over in Western New York

A horrifying crash on the New York State Thruway overturned a tour bus near Pembroke, killing five people and injuring dozens. The bus was on its way from Niagara Falls to New York City with more than 50 aboard.

The incident happened when the bus lost control near the Pembroke exit, veering into the median before flipping over and causing windows to break. Several passengers were thrown from the bus, creating a chaotic scene.

Trooper James O’Callahan reported the driver survived and cooperates fully. Investigators are close to understanding the cause but have not yet released definitive findings.

Although some children were hospitalized, none died despite early conflicting information.

Emergency response teams quickly transported injured passengers to hospitals. Erie County Medical Center treated 20 capable of recovery, including some surgeries.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating, assessing the bus’s mechanics and driver behavior.

Passengers were from multiple countries, creating language challenges addressed by translators on site.

Governor Kathy Hochul and Senator Chuck Schumer expressed sympathy for families affected.

The crash shocked the state. Though rare, such accidents underscore risks faced by large passenger vehicles on highways.

Several safety questions remain open, including whether speed or fatigue played a role. The investigation will continue.

As families cope, calls grow for improved bus safety measures to prevent future tragedies.
