Scientists Uncover Fungus That Controls Spiders and Invades US Homes

A peculiar fungus called Gibellula attenboroughii is captivating scientists and spreading into American homes. This fungus infects spiders, changing their behavior to spread the spores farther.

Infected spiders climb up to open spaces, then die from toxins the fungus produces. The fungus also protects the spider’s body to feed off it.

Research led by Harry Evans reveals that fungi are extremely diverse, with millions still undiscovered, many with fascinating ecological roles like this.

Though the fungus is invading homes, it’s harmless to humans, says mycologist João Araújo, due to the vast genetic changes needed to infect people.

Photographer Ben Mitchell first saw the fungus in Scotland, noting its soft, candyfloss-like shape under leaves with spider toes visible.
